Axpo Kompogas Ltd

The innovative provider for fermentation technology

Since its founding in 1991, the Kompogas brand has stood for the innovative recycling of green wastes for energy recovery. In Switzerland, Axpo Kompogas Ltd operates more than a dozen plants; new plants are also planned in western and southern Switzerland.

The Kompogas process is in demand not just in Switzerland, but also in Europe and world-wide. Axpo Kompogas Ltd has its head office in the Axpo new energies centre of excellence in Glattbrugg (ZH). From its nerve centre here, the company designs and constructs new plants all over the world, and licences the use of the patented Kompogas technology. More than 40 plants that rely on the Kompogas process are now in operation world-wide, the largest of them in Qatar. At 275,000 tonnes, this plant has a greater capacity than all the Axpo Kompogas Ltd plants in Switzerland put together.

For 2008, electricity production from the plants operated by the Axpo Kompogas Group itself in Switzerland totalled more than 18 million kilowatt hours (kWh). A substantial increase in this output is planned over the next few years. Total energy production of electricity, heat and fuels is currently over 52 million kWh/year.

Axpo AG holds a 29 percent stake in the Axpo Kompogas Group, and CKW holds a 20 percent stake. It is planned to increase the holding to 100 percent by 2011. Together with Axpo, Axpo Kompogas Ltd should achieve a leading position in the generation of electrical energy from biomass in Switzerland and Europe.
